The dustbin lorry monster
Friday, February 11, 2005
I'm not quite sure how it got to a month without me updating - I guess I've been busier than I realised. I can always tell when it's a Friday, as the cat will come flying through the cat flap and speed up the stairs in the direction of my bed, much to the dog's delight - live prey!
The reason? Friday is dustbin day... Imagine you're the size of a small cat and you'll probably understand. A very large, smelly monster, that makes curious hissing noises whilst eating wheelie bins with a huge mouth - who wouldn't be scared?
I noticed that Girl, Interrupted was on Channel 4 earlier in the week. I didn't watch it as it was on at an obscene hour, but I did watch my DVD the next day. I like a lot of films, but when I tried to think of a favourite film, I couldn't think of anything other than Girl, Interrupted. With superb acting and such a touching story I can't think of any films that come quite as close - I truly can watch it over and over. For me, it was quite unusual in that it touched me so much the first time I watched it, that I remembered it vividly ever since - there are few films I can see once and recall near word for word thereafter.
Compared to the autobiographical story by Susanna Kaysen upon which it was based, it doesn't follow it that closely. As you might expect from Hollywood, it's quite sensationalised, and yet the film is still an excellent piece in itself. Any fans of the film will definitely enjoy the book - I can't recommend it highly enough. It can certainly be read without feeling one differs from the other too dramatically - they're separate things and certainly come across as such, despite all the extra background and information you learn about the characters, albeit with some different traits to those displayed in the film.
