Mozilla Firefox 1.0 released

Thursday, November 11, 2004

After a couple of years in development, Mozilla's latest forray into the browser market has reached version 1.0. Firefox is already a huge success among the tech savvy users, and looks to be making leaps and bounds towards lowering Internet Explorer's share of the browser market.

For the past year or so, I've been trying each new public release of Firefox, but was yet to change over to using it as my main browser. Whilst I used it very often, it was just too buggy to use full time. Much to my dismay, some of the major issues I've had with previous releases still exist, but I've decided to use it as my main browser for the time being anyway. I'll just have to put up with the various bugs, if and when they appear.

However, I think Firefox still has some way to go before it will make a large dent in the market. I still offer computing advice and support for friends and family who aren't such heavy computer users - the majority of whom just consider 'the little blue e' on their desktop to be 'the Internet'. To them, a browser, or any particular browsers general merits means very little. Until Firefox caters better for more inexperienced users and makes configuration more straightforward, I shan't be recommending it to anyone. I might not have any problems going into about:config and changing browser.tabs.showSingleWindowModePrefs to suit my personal preference, but trying to explain that to my grandparents over the phone is a little more challenging.
