Lost a pound, found a penny

I'm not quite sure where this saying comes from, nor what its supposed to suggest, but in some ways it always seems to ring true for me. I'm generally quite good at keeping an eye on my finances, but why is it that when you underestimate how much money you have you find an extra five pounds sitting about; yet when you overestimate, you seem to end up a thousand pounds shorter than you expected to be...?
